Famous Bates

There are many famous Bates in this country. Some from a long time ago and some  that are living in the present. We would like to make this page a tribute to those Bates who have  gone out of their way to make this country a better place to live, whether it was by patriotic deed, education or entertainment.  They have all contributed greatly. If you know of a Bates who has  contributed  something to life and you would like them listed here please let  the webmaster know.

Liberal benefactor of the Boston Public  Library. Made two generous gifts of $50,000. Born Weymouth (Ma), 1788; died London (England), September 24, 1864. Financier; partner in Baring Brothers & Co.

Kathy Bates, Famous actress.

The Army of Two: Rebecca and Abigail Bates. In 1811 when Captain Simeon Bates became the first lighthouse keeper of the newly built  Scituate Lighthouse. The militia practiced daily nearby and when they were not doing this, they stored the drums and fife in the lighthouse. On one day, while they were all gone hunting, The daughters spotted Redcoats sailing towards the light. It was the British frigate La Hogue and they were intending to pillage the  community,  as they were angry from being denied access to the Boston Harbor. Simeon Bates daughters sent a younger brother to find the militia and after extinguishing the light, took drum and fife out back in the woods and proceeded to play Yankee Doodle as loudly as they could in hopes of deterring the British  who were about to make land. Upon hearing the sounds of Militia, they altered their course and all was safe on land.

Martin VanBuren Bates: Also known as the Kentucky Giant and the Giant of the hills. His wife Anna Hannah Swan was also a giant. MARTIN VAN BUREN BATES was normal size at birth.  He was the son of normal sized parents and his brothers and sisters. Yet MARTIN BATES grew to seven feet and eleven inches tall, and for years his weight was 525 pounds. He was a courageous and fearless officer in the Civil War, gaining his commission for bravery on the battlefield. Captain BATES toured the world. He was known all over the United States, Canada, England, and Europe.
